Father Ted

Recommended Posts

The first series was quite good I suppose but there are loads of sitcoms better than it though (Alan, Black Books, Curb, Larry Sanders, Spaced, Seinfeld, 15 storeys high blah blah).

There is no way that anyone who considers Seinfeld to be shit should be taken seriously as regards taste in television.

Seinfeld = best American sitcom ever

Father Ted = best British* sitcom ever

To be honest I'd be interested in finding out how many of the people in this thread are Catholic... It's not uniquely Irish, but surely you have to have been tortured by priests and nuns to get some of the better gags.

As a former altar boy, and practising Catholic, I still don't think the jokes apply to me any more than anyone else. I did get a bit of an extra chuckle with the Rocky-like preperations of Father Ted in the sacristy before the mass he had to say super-fast. Fantastic.

Best show ever, by the way.

"Do you know what I mean?"

"I do, Ted."

"Really?!"

"No."

You're perfectly entitled to say that, because the shows creators originally went to RTE (Irish national tv network) and were turned down!! They brought it to Channel 4 and the y, of course, snapped it up.

Fair dos. As a lapsed Catholic I certainly can't understand how jokes about mass or the pointlessness of confession could be as funny to someone who's never sat through them.

Because it's aimed at the general public.

You don't see people going "I don't understand Red Dwarf because I don't live in the year 3 million with an evolved cat, a mechanoid and a gimboid" do you? <_<

Im not religious but everyone knows about mass and things like that. And even if you dont, its so heavily played that you understand mass is something which is incredably dull.

I found loads of it funny, even deep religious stuff they mentioned because it was always explained to those that didnt know what they were making a joke about.

The European Song Contest episode is comedy gold. Especially when they realise they've ripped off the melody and default back to their two note version.

"My lovely horse running through the... FIELD."

A Divine Comedy B-Side (to Gin Soaked Boy IIRC).

um, guys? Help me out here:

how wrong is he? is he wrong?

It's the target of the joke that is important.

If we are expected to find Hitler Ted funny when he is rounding up jews and gassing them then it's wrong.

If we're laughing because Ted has inadvertently been mistaken for a Nazi in stark contrast to his Christian calling then it is simply funny.

exactly:

mistaken for a nazi

acts like a nazi

it's not the same joke.

Ted as Pope? So who takes on the mantle of playing one of the greatest religious figures of all time - Father Ted? That's going to be tough.

Maybe they could get the fella from the unofficial dinner experience to do it.
