Today, Lucasfilm Games announced that it’s entering a partnership with Ubisoft to create an open-world Star Wars game. The title will be developed by Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, marking the first time that a company outside of EA has produced a Star Wars game since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, ending nearly eight years of exclusivity.

Maybe it’ll be set in the prequel universe where everybody of any historical importance already lives in the same six square miles of each other. Perfect “open” “world” “game” material.

Sounds like it has potential, pre-order now to get exclusive access to baby yoda's blue sweets and a rock in the shape of a sarlacc pit monster.

Ubisoft do make quite nice open worlds, and I am quite tempted by the idea of exploring some vast landscape that looks like something out of an ILM matte painting. That said, I think Star Wars thrives on the variety of worlds on display, so they would need to provide a quite a few different planets, which would probably limit the scope. The various worlds in Star Wars don't have much more to them than being the ice world or the desert world or the forest moon or the Lake District planet, etc, so the scope for exploration on each one would be limited.

Also, I can imagine the classic Ubisoft template seeming a bit rubbish post-Cyberpunk.
