Grand Theft Auto VI (Unconfirmed)

Recommended Posts

I don't think it would be a massive surprise for it to be set in Miami. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'd be pretty shocked if it wasn't to be honest. It feels a little soon to do California again, and New York still looks amazing, so it seems the natural choice. With Miami and with the massive maps they have now then I guess you'd have the Everglades to tit about in, which would be nice. They've got form for having a cheeky tropical island in there with Red Dead 2 too, so I guess you could have a Cuba, Haiti, maybe a Jamaica facsimile.

I have wondered if they might try and add a better free-play mechanic to single player to compliment the story a bit. Buying junk yards and bars and that was quite good fun but pretty limited and a bit pointless in the end. If they could get the drug dealing of China Town Wars involved somehow and have you running a big 1980s gak empire across the Caribbean then I'd imagine that would be the business. Off your nut on recreationals and flying a Cessna around the coast would be ace.

One way or another I'm going to stick my neck out and say they're making it.

It would be right up Rockstar's movie-aping and delicate nuanced grip of modern racial sensitivities to do a Scarface lift when they next revisit Miami. So sure, I can get behind a leak that say we'll get Florida, and some other places.

Although "Americas" fits less well with that, to mymind, than a Mexico-border setup.

if the second island was inspired by Haiti or the DR then it would be the first time a GTA game featured locations from both North and South America

Problem: the Caribbean isn't in South America.

That aside, intriguing stuff and I could well believe Rockstar would be interested in returning to Vice City at some point, even they ditch the 80s aesthetic.

Timescale of a release is a " fun " thing too.

New consoles are out November 2020.  With a version of GTA V  re-appearing soon after. 2020/2021 to tide us over.

The gap between GTA IV  in 2008 and GTA V  was about 4.5 years.

GTA V came out  2013/2014/2015 across the old consoles & our current consoles and PC.

So if they are wanting to go bigger and better, plus factor in Covid-19  we are probably looking at a 7.5 year production. ( this is including any research since 2015 )

Thus I am going to lay down September 2022  as a solid date.

OR.. if they have somehow been doing their thing quicker than my thinking,  May 2022.

But then? what happens if Rockstar do their usual thing and keep tweaking it until they think it is ready.... in that case Spring 2023 :o

- You watch this be completely wrong and it suddenly appears out of nowhere in 2021 :D

GTA VI will only have an online mode initially. Development of the single player mode - which will be exactly as good as you expect it to be - will be financed by people buying Shark Cash Cards.

Source: my uncle showed me the beta running on his Switch Pro development unit.

Pretty sure that people at Rockstar have "unannounced GTA title" on their LinkedIn bios, so yeah, of course they're making a new GTA game, that bit isn't secret.

Interesting theory on set and setting though.

Am I missing something here? They already lifted Scarface pretty much wholesale for Vice City.

I would love them to go back there though, as it’s my favourite GTA. Just imagine how it could look on these upcoming consoles.

I meant to imply more in the actually taking note of Tony Montana being a Cuban immigrant (which, from memory, doesn't really apply in Vice City?) Yes they did the 80s tale and the gangstering and the big mansion - all a rip from Scarface as you say. But I could imagine Rockstar now leaning into the other aspects.

I can't tell you how brilliant Cuba would be as a GTA playground. Quite apart from the Castro history, the beautifully decayed colonial architecture, the insanely brilliant music, the mixture of jungle and mountain - you have the roads. Cuban traffic is the most bizarre sight, like a random vehicle generator from any moment in civilisation. You have horses, oxen and cart, crappy Soviet volga box cars from the 1950's, lovingly refurbished vintage American cars that often operate like tourist taxis, and then a whole bunch of modern cars, all sharing the same roads. It's the most eclectic wonderful thing. And could lead to some very comic police chases.

They spent loads of time and money on that Caribbean island in RDR2, which had an open world you explored for about twenty minutes and never saw again. Pure speculation, but it would make sense for them to re-work all that stuff for a Grand Theft Auto game.

Was it Driver 2 that was partly based in Cuba? Enjoyed that bit - though was years ago obvs and pretty simple.

The rivalry between the two series with nods and winks was amusing.

EDIT: Yep it was

I’d love if they go back to Vice City. Last time they did multiple characters - they could do multiple time periods this time round? Do the Scarface pastiche for the first half of the game in the 80s, then the main character gets locked up and comes out in the 2010s.

I’d like a GTA game that spanned eras in a territory, charting the rise (and likely fall) of a protagonist as they go from low-level wannabe to kingpin. Cocaine Cowboys as a reference point, along with whatever gangster films Rockstar haven’t already aped.

I reckon Narcos was probably the big crime show around the time they’d have started this so it makes sense that they’d go for some South America to Miami drug-running thing. Going from an island of Cuba would be easier than Colombia for this sort of game I suppose.

‘70s / ‘80s set would be cool. I think the internet and mobiles offers too many shortcuts while also taking away a lot of options.

I doubt they’d want to take away that system to buy stuff though so they’ll have to add something else in.

What could they do with it that wasn’t done in Vice City? (Quite brilliantly, mind.)

I've watched every episode of Miami Vice and they took so, so much from it. If it didn't come from Scarface it was probably from Vice. The other thing is that Houser was always hard for LA- and NY-based films and series, so it'll be hard to shake the feeling that Miami was simply due its turn in their limited rotation if they return.

I'd rather a scaled-down Sardinia with Corsica and Sicily, offering similarly glorious sunshine vibes with a ton of new inspirations to work with. And if they set it around 2000 it'd also be a remake in that sense.

Cruising round Vice City with Broken Wings on the radio is one of my fondest gaming memories. In my head, its all in glorious 4K with sun-drenched raytraced reflections on every skyscraper. At this point, a remake would be fine with me, but this is mainly because I am a sad nostalgia-obsessed man-child living in the past.

Unofficially set in 1986, we were equidistant two years ago! Now I feel like the '80s were 18 years ago. It's still the last game to amaze me with its generational jump (I hadn't played III at the time).

RockstarNorth are so wealthy that they most probably have a small team constantly working on it, creating prototypes of new features and systems. I'd bet that even in the height of Red Dead Redemption development that there is a small team somewhere constantly working on it

So basically a Narcos inspired thing with drug trafficking up from Pablo Escobar's private island, around the Carribean and into Miami? I'd be well up for that.

Escort the boat past the coastguard without being seen. (You absolutely will be seen and have to deal with the ensuing shootout until a timer counts down and decides you’re in the clear).
