Lol, Ralph 'wax on,wax off' Macchio, AKA The Karate Kid, is in this as well! buried somewhere down the cast list, I think he plays a cop.

yeah it's brilliant, the pimps are such a shower of cunts but played so well that you could almost forget it and start to root for them. Larry (who I just realised is Chris from the Wire, holy shit!) in particular just makes me laugh with his big glum face

Fuck man no shit! I didn't even realise and I've watched The Wire 3 times. I'm loving this now, 6 episodes in and I'm hooked, could easily watch another few seasons.

Who else from The Wire is in this? As well as Larry, who is Chris Partlow from The Wire, we have the cop whose name I can't remember, who is D'Angelo, the pimp played by Method Man, who was Cheese in the wire, and the desk sergeant in the police station, who was the dodgy lawyer in the wire.

Anyone I've missed? I'm only up to episode 4, mind.

Edit: Frank Sabotka, of course. D'oh.

The guy who runs the diner is Slim Charles from the wire. Also the desk officer/briefing guy in the police station is the shady lawyer from the Wire

the real star of the show is Method Man's wig, omfg

This is absolutely incredible. Worlds apart from other recent HBO stuff.

So refreshing.

The only thing that stood out was the lighting. The night shots look so fake it's disconcerting. It looks fucking amazing in natural light and the costumes and sets are phenomenal, but it looks like A GTA4 cutscene at night.

Just me?

Pimps getting sad that the world is passing them by and talking about Fantasia

CC is a monster but I love watching him do things, the way he was talking to Leon and snatched something (a lighter?) off the countertop and swaggered off, fucking dynamite.

Great last episode, could have easily watched another 8 episodes.

The refuge for ex Wire actors continues...

Spoiler

Lester Freamon!!

Also,  WARNING!! Plot spoiler:

Spoiler

poor 'Thunder' :(

It was inevitable that one of the girls would die I suppose, but I just didn't think it would be her.

I could feel that coming

Spoiler

When she was talking to the cop and then when Maggie was calling out from the car sealed the deal for me. I was sure she wouldn’t be seen alive by them again.

When’s the final episode broadcast over here?

Cos I just finished ep 7. And fuck me if it’s not the first time I'm finally getting David Simon and that’s after two attempts to watch the Wire and Treme. Utterly fucking superb TV.

I can’t wait to watch this - being David SImon I’ve saved them all up on my sky box so I can binge in a few nights and get the continuity and flow of things better, as his shows normally suit watching that way.

8 episodes is certainly not enough - amazing from beginning to end. Very sad its over, really hope we get more.

I think the show is renewed for a second season, but there will be a time skip to the late 70s.  Simon's said that they've planned it out for three seasons in all, with the third set in the 80s.  I'm not sure if I really want the time skips and shorter seasons, would rather have something more meaty like the Wire.

Finished it last night and like most people, enjoyed it immensely. Simons shows rarely have a scene that makes me feel that its been written for the show if that makes sense.  Even when watching other good shows, i sometimes find myself sucked out at scenes thats clearly written to suit the plot or story.  These 8 episodes flowed so well and only twice for me did it feel clunky

Spoiler

Velvet Underground on the radio while they were in bed "this is lou's finest"

Mentor Pimp having a drink before his wife / sugarmummy came in with the groceries.  I guess i didn't fully hear what he said as i was distracted thinking about the wire alumni

For some reason not got round to this and just started - 3 eps in and I love it

It's got all the classic Simon hallmarks where you just feel as a viewer like you've been dropped into another world and are playing catch up with the lingo and backstories, piecing things together as it goes along.

The look of the thing is amazing, everywhere and everybody look so dirty,  unclean and grimy.

Also enjoy recognising the actors a few years on from the Wire, Levy the lawyer, poor old D'Angelo and Chris.

Finally got around to watching a few episodes of this and it really is superb as I hoped it would be. Why did I wait so long?!?

that was exactly what i was thinking when I binged the whole thing in a couple of days.

enjoyed it far more than Treme, which I sort of endured in places as it felt a bit of a slog.

back soon too, hopefully Sky Atlantic don't hold it back.

looks like they will be showing fairly quickly - not sure I can hold back and spool up the whole series for a binge watch like first time round
