Sonic Mania

Is the DLC worth it?

Only if you truly love Sonic. Doesn't do much for casual fans as it's basically the same zones but a little harder and different colours for the zones. Mighty and Ray are great to play as, but again, considering the more casual fans dislike sidekicks as it is, what you enjoy may vary.

For me, I've loved Mighty & Ray, especially for the time trials, which have meant double the amount of time trials with the reramped zones + stratagies for each character.

Is that the same ones who don't write the fanfics, spaff over Rouge or even buy the fursuits?

Those who buy the fur suits are probably two tiers above my level of fandom. It's a complicated pyramid of Sonic Fandom Tier Levels, man.

Bought this last night. Accidentally up until 3 am playing. Absolutely amazing game. Brilliant sound, graphics, gameplay. Took me back to 1995.

If this were released on the Saturn it would have been my favourite game by far.

I am sleep deprived and hyped, but this game was missing in my life :)

First gameplay actually streamed on YT if anyone is crazy bored

Edit: BTW I had all the old ROMs and so on from over the years, the composite games, all that stuff. Knew of Christian Whitehead, but I lost interest after seeing so many shit official Sonic games, I just switched off. This has been a revelation and I can't wait to get back to playing some more :)

cannot believe how good this is. Also, how it slipped me by. I have been very busy in the last couple of years (moved country... twice), and basically gave up on anything sonic related a long time ago. I actually loved SA and SA2 on the DC, but they were pretty good games. I do prefer the 2D platformers, though. I would always come back to the old ROMS... it's why I still have a PSP kicking around.

So, rather than take my PSP/Vita with me on upcoming flights and train travel, I am considering buying a Switch, mainly for this, but perhaps some other titles. I have a PS4 and an XBone, and wasn't particularly tempted by the Switch, but this has made me want one. Bit of an outlay for one game, but it's not coming to Vita, so I need to do something about that.

I've waited (same as most of you) for a decent Sonic game for what, 23 years? This would have been perfect on the Saturn, or even Dreamcast. I know why they went 3D, and all of the company failings, but Jesus. I can't remember a time a game made me feel this good/couldn't put it down.

True dat. I was hoping for a sequel until I saw what Whitehead and his team are doing right now  :(

Doesn't look bad by any strectch, but more Sonic Mania this ain't.

Looks more like generic Amiga Sonic rip-off mania to me.

Freedom Planet looks like Sonic without the license. Does it play a good game of Sonic? Looks like just the ticket while we wait for more Sonic.

Sonic Sonic Sonic.

I bought Freedom Planet on Wii U. It looked the part, it played pretty well, but I was conscious I was playing a single level for almost 20 minutes. That’s just too long, I’m afraid.

Freedom planet looks alright, but it's just not what I think we're generally after. I'm not sure it's simply "1991" that I am yearning for, though the nostalgia is extremely high here with Mania, it's more that it's a genuine sequel (OK, almost a sequel to me, to some it's more of a revisit) to the Sonic series where 3&K left off.  It's not simply that I love sprites (I do) and this kind of in-game music (I do) and this type of gameplay (I do)... it really is that it's Sonic.

So, if this would have been a different character set, it would have taken me even longer to catch it. It slipped under my radar as it was, and no doubt I am missing out on so many brilliant games—always the case!

What I would like from here on out is:

  • This game engine
  • > 70% new levels (I actually don't mind revisiting older levels as time goes on; I would like to play a revised Emerald Hill and Mystic Ruin as well as Spring Yard to name a few—omg the latter with Tee Lopes
  • named officially Sonic 4 with a decent story (cut scenes only, no need for voice acting)
  •

Problems I see with this is that the official Sonic Team are now smoking crack or whatever and developing this "3D Sonic". The fact they have split sonic into two characters shows how fucked up this is. Do Nintendo do this with Mario? Say there's old Class Mario and 3D Mario co-existing?  Will SEGA allow it? I bloody hope so. Just hand the franchise over to them.

However, having made the mistake of reading some Youtube comments, so people actually love Forces, and these modern 3D-but-not-3D Sonic games. To me they play nothing like the old ones and Mania, and lack almost all of the visual appeal. As I said, I do love SA and SA2, but that was a different time and those are OK games. I had waited long enough by that point, but it was no Mario 64.

I had actually left Sonic to die. Like many things I loved over the years, corporations have fucked things up. TV series, movie franchises... there's so much I ignore and basically pretend doesn't exist so as to not sully my fond memories of quality productions, not simply money makers. Lion King "live action"... Sonic movie... "live action"... Jesus Christ

OK time, to boot Mania and take my mind off things :)

Freedom Planet, against all odds, was actually pretty good. Had no idea there was a sequel but interest peaked/peeked.

And piqued:D

Yes

EDIT: Those screenshots almost make me want the Mario games. Both look lovely. Just hack it and replace it with Sonic, and same for soundtracks? :)

Sure, but do they do this kind of thing?

Like literally have the two co-exist in this manner? IMO they should stop with this; there's no need for it! Sonic can look different in a 3D stage and in a 2D stage, no-one needs an explanation for the number of spikes etc.

I played Sonic Rush on the iPad a while back and that was a nail in a coffin. There was Sonic 4 Episode 1 I had a go at but again, just didn't feel right.

As has been said, Freedom Planet is a fine game, but it's not quite Sonic in the way it plays out. I'd actually put it closer to Ristar if Ristar could run.

Great to see people still discovering Mania. :)

My main HQ is the other side of Germany - 5 hour train ride. I visit once per month. I am going to HK soon, and have other flights throughout the year. It's a shame that this isn't on Vita, but that it's on Switch at all really is making me think of jumping on a Switch and getting this (and something else I suppose).

Without going into the Switch thread... there are a few other games worth buying, right? :)

@Nick R Awesome. I have played multiple ROMs etc, all on the PSP, and kept a brief look-in on what was happening and knew of Christian Whitehead etc, but this whole thing has taken me by surprise. Still amazed I missed it all. Must have been under a rock!

This version is immense also.... that bass...:

There's also this version, which happened when internet nerds shoved some video game sheet music in front of one of the world's best ragtime pianists and asked him to sight read it:

Sure, but do they do this kind of thing?

The Mario kart games have Baby Mario (and other characters) with the Normal Mario (and other characters.

Probably the sports games too. None of the mainline games though.

OT, but the Super Mario World end theme by the same guy is amazing!
