Bond 25: Mar 2020 - Craig confirmed for Bond - Cary Fukunaga to direct

Recommended Posts

Nothing to report as yet but it seems that in the last couple of days, at least one bookmaker has stopped taking bets on Tom Hiddleston being the next James Bond. While Daniel Craig hasn't been officially retired, he more than said he wasn't returning (on many occasions) during the press tour for Spectre.

There's speculation too that Idris Elba is still in the running

What's odd is that Sam Mendes ruled himself out of returning for Bond 25, but was seen meeting with Hiddleston last week. Could just be that they want to work together and has nothing to do with Bond or perhaps Craig was the reason Mendes didn't want to return....

It will be good to see a new actor come in and hopefully also see the films move back towards what made Bond fun in the old days.

Yep, Daniel Craig's run promised big but delivered little. The last five minute of Casino Royale was the highlight of this incarnation.

You could also say the same about Brosnan, after the excellent GoldenEye.

Anyway, I think they'll stick with Craig for one more. He's contracted to do one more and his Bond's are still doing good box office. Plus EON hate any risk to their money making machine.

But yeah, Christian Bale in a Christopher Nolan written and directed Bond trilogy would still be better.

I think Dalton worked well because he had that villainous edge to him. Bond is supposed to be a ruthless bastard with a psychotic attention to detail. Then he gets his hole and starts becoming all soft and wants to retire to either the Caribbean or a cottage in Dorset.

Well, that's what happened in the books.

I hope they go with Luke Evans. T Hidds always seem a little too effete for Bond, and I reckon Gay Welsh Orlando Bloom could pull off the gentleman thug thing pretty well.

I thought No News Is Good News was the title, but then I am pretty stupid.

Hiddleston would be fine, he could certainly pull off the necessary charisma. Just think might require a change in tone for the films as he seems to be more 'slight' than Craig, so perhaps wouldn't pull off the physicality as successfully (something Elba would have no issues with). But I vote Damian Lewis for Bond, it's time for us gingers to have an icon that isn't Gerri Halliwell, Mick Hucknall or King Louie.

Age is nothing for actors these days. Look at Keanu Reeves, dude looks about 33 and he's in his early 50s.

Imagine the next few Bonds will do 3 films apiece, otherwise you're looking at over a decade of commitment and actors get all uppity about creative freedom by that point (it's in the Hollywood manual, p52).

He's probably an unfair example because he ages at the rate of a bowhead whale, but most leading men don't look their ages these days. Don't think leads in their 40s are outside consideration if Craig decides to swan off into the sunset. Actually, he's pretty glum now, his swanning days might be over. He'll probably trudge, hands plunged deep into his coat pockets, kicking over a bin and shouting at pigeons to stop bothering him as he stomps off.

Loved Skyfall, Spectre piss in comparison. Rather the franchise take a break for a bit, but I'd let Craig do one more whenever it happens.

I must be the only one pumping for Dan Stevens after his performance in The Guest.

Me too. But that was only one film. That said, I do wonder if Craig "auditioned" for Bond through his performance in Layer Cake.

Also, a rare serious NEG post!

Please don't let it be Elba he went from kind of decent to Harrison Ford/Bruce Willis levels of visibly not giving a shit onscreen in record time.

Whilst Craig was very glum about the role during the press tour for Spectre, he came out after and clarified that it was normal for him to finish a Bond film and then hate the role for a bit, before getting back into the mood. I'd expect him to fulfill his contract.

Hiddleston doesn't have the presence, to me, to pull the role off. It's not just a physical thing (though that is a part) but he doesn't look like he has the steel to go with the charisma. Elba was quite good (with limited material) in Bastille Day. Does nobody mention Tom Hardy any more though? I reckon he could do the job.

It's not that outlandish a suggestion surely?

Not really, it just seems that he's not really in contention.  Although I forget, was Craig a front runner before he was properly announced?

Hiddlestone is way too creepy to be Bond. Elba is too boring and obvious a choice. And Lewis is a ginger!

Hopefully there is someone much more interesting (that we don't know about yet) in the running.

I don't think he's creepy really but I guess I can see where you're coming from. Loki has shown how good a villain he can be, Id rather see him in that role.

I think Jude Law would be good tbh, if you've seen Spy, you can see he has the right look for it. Don't know if he's a little old for it now though, he's only a few years younger than Craig. I think he'd be the perfect type of actor to bring some of the fun back to the role though.
