No Man's Sky - Beyond update inc. VR out now

It's pretty simple once you get going, but it means spending time at the refiner rather than exploring. So that's a bit of a down-side.

The second planet I landed on had "Natural Burial Site" areas on it which made me a fortune early on - the bones you dig up range from 60k value to around 2mill (each). So if you find a planet with bones, find yourself a building with a sales terminal, then plonk down a base next door and go hunting for burial sites. One thing to note, the bones don't stack so you need lots of open inventory space.

Thats one of the reasons I’m mining - there are some valuable goodies here but they’re not stackable and I don’t have any suit upgrades yet. 10000 gold in all my available slots should be a good start for my bank account  I feel like I’ve stumbled into Gringotts here compared to my starting game a few years back

Don't forget that you can buy a suit slot in each space station (starting at 10k and going up by 10k per slot, if I remember correctly). I totally forgot to do it at the first station so I went back as soon as I could. I think the next thing on my list is to do some warping to get more slots, it's the quickest way to get them if you have some cash to spare (which you will do with all that gold!)

What are your specs? Also, did you play in normal 2D mode beforehand?

9900k and 1080ti. Everything is set on enhanced. Yeah, but not a lot, I've got about 20 hours spread out over various saves. I started a new game in VR though.

I'm on 9900k, 2080ti, and 32gb Ram. And performance is pretty shit. But I'm wondering if its because the game's VR settings are tied in with the 2D settings, using the refresh rate of your main display, which in my case is a TV at a max of 60hz...

The game is a lot fo fun to play, but constant frame drops in VR, even at enhanced settings, are really spoiling it. Also, having rocks, trees, and even fauna materialise right in front of you because they hadn't been drawn in is just unacceptable considering the spec of my PC.

I'm sure they'll fix it, but who knows when...

That's the kicker isn't it? Because they drop these half finished releases on us they'll need to spend a long time getting the game into a state where it doesn't have so many show stoppers before they can even think about looking at the performance. The amount of really obvious bugs (Even in pancake mode) shows that they were more concerned with hitting a date than pushing out quality. (Says the man with a 19 hours save game since friday).

The performance  between the vulkan experimental patches and now has gotten far worse. I'd say Beyond is far, far more broken than Next was at launch.

Is anyone else having problems with base power? I've got some solar generators, hooked up to batteries and feeding a small room I made out of blocks. Inside the room I have a medi terminal. Nothing I do will power the damn thing. My teleporter hooked to some different generators works fine.

The big black rock cock in front of my landing pad just oozes class though.

The power does seem to be a little bit awkward. Have you tried building a prefab room and seeing if it's powered up when the room is? I might give that a go now and report back...bear with me

*Edit* can't try it, I don't have any Uranium so there's no point buying the blueprint yet as I wouldn't be able to build it :( It wouldn't surprise me if it's supposed to go on the prefab round or square rooms as they seem to power what's inside them. It could be worth you trying if you have the blueprints for those.

It's a bit of a double edged sword that the game now has so, so much to do.

When it launched (as you will see from my posts at the time), the game was much more bare bones, and as a result it had much more of a "Make your own fun" vibe to it. And I loved that. But now there is almost literally an infinite To Do list, and I'm never going to get to it all. If you're the sort of person who very much needs to progress in a game, then I can see how this would feel like a slog. But most of my playtime in NMS has been chilling. Just walking about on planets looking for nice views, or exploring underwater caves, or whatever. That's the way I like to play the game, and I slightly resent/regret that the updates have moved the focus away from this, and towards giving the player more tasks to complete. I really just want more creature and biome diversity. Oh, and rain on the cockpit glass please, as per this recent Reddit post:

Yeah, strongly agree. I liked the game just after launch when it had been patched up a bit, but now it's turned into this sprawling, online epic with far too much stuff to do. I constantly feel like I'm running around balancing resources and remembering things and not really enjoying the universe itself that much. Do not want other people in my game, ruining that Silent Running isolation atmosphere.

When it was a Chris Foss book cover simulator you could just enjoy framing shots and doing minimal busywork, but now it's system upon system upon system, so much exhausting stuff to think about.

It feels like the original game was what Hello Games wanted to make, but Beyond is what everyone else wanted them to make. The scope of it is just too vast, and it's hard to imagine it ever running smoothly and bug free. It crashed at least ten times on me this weekend, just crazy to release something that unreliable. It's a shame, I really want to love it and there is something great in there, but it's just so deeply flawed.

Yeah that makes sense bug wise. I'll try it tonight. I have the blueprint for the prefab square room.

Can you imagine how much crunch those poor fuckers are going through right now? Steam downloaded a patch for me at midnight last night.

I thought I was having issues due to my lower specs but if it's still bad for you with that setup then maybe there is still something else I can try.

Thought I would just wait a bit for some updates, see if it helps.

I think that approach to the game, can probably still be taken, but you'd have to go out of your way to do that. Turning off the Online stuff etc.

The bugs will get (indeed, are getting) ironed out.

Of all the annoying things in No Man's Sky, repairing Frigates has entered the top 40 and gone straight to number 1. Anyone have any advice on how to stop Frigates getting damaged when out on missions? I seriously can't be expected to manually repair 6 work stations on each Frigate every single time...? Right? Right guys? :(

(Am really loving coming back to this game though! Insane how much they've added)

Kill pirates and get those scanner buffs that give you hundreds of thousands of units per flora/fauna scan.

I was forced to test the effectiveness of the flight stick in a NMS dogfight tonight - not my first hostile scan but the first one that caught me without an escape route before the fight. Two chumps, the first was easily dispatched as I was able to tail him, not completely intuitive with the flipped roll controls, also coming straight from AC7 I was foolishly concerned about stalling at low speed - which meant I ended up running into the back of him as I was chasing. Once he was down the other guy presented more of a threat as he was rushing me head-on and hitting me with a beam weapon every time, so it was a damage race.

I won, but I didn't get any scanner buffs. Do you still have to pick up floating pills in space after combat? I didn't see anything and I didn't get any victory messages either :/

The scanner upgrades are for your multitool. You buy them from space stations with nanites

Yeah you can. It sucks. The lesson is to not send them on missions that are too hard for them.

Then what is it about killing pirates that makes you rich? I didn't get any reward at all.

Two things.

Sometimes they drop very valuable items when you pop them.

Second and more important. You'll randomly get pirates with a bounty on them enter your system. The lowest rank gives you 100k to pop him and they're very easy. I wouldn't call pirate hunting a reliable way to make money though. Unless you're doing it from a mission.

Definitely start working on your space station missions as you tool about though. Even at the lowest level those missions add up. Especially the ones that give you trade items to sell. One reward for me was worth 1.5million and that was at rank 2 for that faction. I grab everything that says "kill creature" or kill sentinels". I'll be doing both at some point and if you have 6 "kill creature" missions one kill counts for every mission at the same time. The rewards add up very quickly. And you start ranking up with the factions for bigger rewards. I wouldn't do the delivery missions (They require warping. Not worth it) and the acquire by mining missions are often bugged at the handing in. They're good but not worth it until patched.

The next Korvax rank for me is showing up with missions like "Kill 12 animals" but the cash reward has gone from 50-60k to 250k+

Hmm, that is odd. I have 144hz monitors and g-sync enabled. Which thinking about I should probably turn off.

The ones where you build a specialist terminal and hire blokes. The Gek overseer gives you the other 9 pretty early on.

Ahhhh, i’d forgotten about those after I moved bases! Thank you!

Tip 1: Drop Pods contain an exosuit upgrade.

Tip 2: Get down on the floor and run over those little light domes inside the Atlas Interfaces. You learn words.

Okay, that’s the reason. The main quest doesn’t include the building of the science tables and recruiting of the Gek and Korvax. I can’t see these items in the build or research to build menus either.

Edit: unless.......okay, I just visited one of my bases and that had the red quest icon. Hurrah, I was able to access the archives. Wondering now if this puts me on the path to the benches.

Just need to work out how to safely make my main base my main base in base computer eyes...

It’s bloody stupid you can’t access that quest from just any base.

Due to the bathroom refit I’ve not had much time on this today - however, I got it into my head that I needed to set up an Aardvark Farm.

So I built a couple of solar panels and connected them to a battery...sat in the dark waiting for the dawn to see if they worked.

They worked!

The battery keeps the power on when the sun goes down. Pretty cool stuff.

Connected up an Automatic Milking Machine and tested it out on a passing creature. Seems like you need to feed them with a pellet and then some bait, then get them to walk close to the milking machine.

The Automatic Feeding Machine didn’t seem to be working so scrapped it and went hunting for a pack of Space Aardvarks. Found a couple and rode one back to the milker.

My milker brings all the Aardvarks to the yard!

Mission rewards are getting good

THl3mkE.png

One "kill 11 creatures" mission gave me a hot ice which sold for 1.5million

The refiner recipe with the chlorine works well. You just need some starting chlorine and enough money to buy some oxygen to get started (Oxy is about 41 units each).

1 chlorine and 2 oxy makes 6 chlorine and it processes fast. A stack of 9999 (About 5-10 mins max) gets you about 6 million. I just station hop around buying oxygen and I make sure I always leave myself a bit of chlorine left to get started again. Literally even 1 chlorine is enough to start the process as long as you have oxygen.

The large refiner is a free reward from the base quests but it's really easy to dig up enough salvaged tech to buy the medium from the nexus.

Looks like I've got this running reasonably well in VR again. I completely uninstalled the game, deleting all the folders and files except for my save games. Re-installed, played on my TV first and oh boy does the game look good and run well on my PC. :D  But after that I went back to VR, and performance was decent again. I'm not using the experimental build just the normal.

One thing that is a bug - terrain at a certain distance causes what looks like scan lines ... but only in the right eye. I thought it was my Rift S, but no other games have the issue. The game can and should look better than it presently does in VR, but at least it's now nicely playable. As nice is it looks in 4k, VR makes the game even more immersive.

Now I just hope they really fix all the issues. :)

I switched back to the TV for a bit of supply purchasing and logging my discoveries - the kids were around so no VR option. Yes it looks a lot clearer (so probably better for photography), and the text input is better with DS4, but I realized I want to play it exclusively   in VR. I did it the other way three years ago. VR is just so immersive, and that's the whole point. You get used to the resolution - less so if you chop and change.

That farming guide is vastly more tedious than it needs to be. (I know minmaxing the game is a fun challenge in itself...)

Just build a mixed farm on your freighter, maybe a couple of gas harvesting bases* (or scout systems where gases are traded at trading posts) to get an initial stock of materials, then just do guild missions and/or visit minor settlement shops and/or sending out frigate (PBM) expeditions to get generous quantities of the intermediate products. You'll be constantly trickling products down the tech tree while playing the interesting parts of the game.

You don't need a billion units. Unless they've significantly increased the prices of ships, frigates and capital class freighters. Units are easy to come by, it's certain building materials that are annoyingly scarce if you get into serious base building.

*You can efficiently convert any gas to any other with the large refiner, so there's not that much point in having multiple gas farms.

Eighthours: I think your best odds are to find a wealthy high tech/scientific system and try the multitool shop on the local space station.

In PSVR ‘my’ hands clip the flighstick and thrust control. When I first started they animated properly. Anyone else getting this?

You've changed your body type. Change it back to the default, and the hand won't clip.

I had the same issue in PC.
