  1. This game looks too beautiful not to get its own thread right away! Next year, Square Enix will grace the Nintendo 3DS with a new, original RPG called Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. Nintendo showed off snippets of gameplay from it at its pre-TGS 3DS Conference today, revealing a game that looked visually close to the stunningly looking NDS game Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The game is pitched as an original IP, one that capitalizes on the 3DS's cameras and augmented reality features for its gameplay (yay!). Expect AR cards to play some role in the final game, when it is released in Japan in 2012. absolutely luuurvely debut trailer: "What's not to love?" Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is a 2012 role-playing video game by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS, a spiritual successor to the 2010 video game Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The game was developed by Silicon Studio, best known for the adventure game 3D Dot Game Heroes. The game’s job and battle system are similar to Final Fantasy V. It features augmented reality in the gameplay. Bravely Default utilizes turn-based combat and multi-hit combination moves. The game also features cut scenes. There is a job system, similar to those in some other Square Enix games such as Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The game has a single save slot, which Producer Tomoya Asano stated on Twitter is due to the game's "wireless features". Bravely Default features heavy use of voice acting within the story and during battles. Producer Tomoya Asano has said that the game will feature multiple endings. With the official Member's Site, the players can create a community, unlock achievements (otherwise impossible for the 3DS) and take on Quests created for the whole community. >> Official Japanese site.

  3. First up this isn’t a brand new update for the game thread before anyone gets excited sorry. Moreso it’s a thread I’ve created simply because I can’t find any info on this here or a thread of its own currently so I thought I’d do one now. I picked it up earlier while browsing for something to get for my 3DS and as it’s not too long ago that I went through FF XII for the first time, thought why not seeing as it’s supposedly a sequel of sorts set shortly after the main game. I know many on here already cherish FF XII and it’s recent ish remaster. I’ve not player it yet but will be taking it while I’m away on holiday to tinker with, and wanted to get a bit of a conversation going on here to see who else has checked it out previously. Maybe it might inspire others to pick it up or return back to it. I know next to nothing about it other than a friend of mine had told me he went through it in the past and enjoyed it.

  5. So the UK release is next week, and it may not be high on everyone's wishlist, but I am ridiculously excited for this. I think this could be the last major physical release for the 3DS and it's kind of fitting as it's the only platform that it can really work on. This game is mentioned in the Persona spinoff thread, but I figure it deserves its own discussion. For those unaware of it, the game is a mashup of Persona and Etrian Odyssey, so loads of dungeon crawling, turn based combat and map drawing all set within the world of the Persona series. This one has characters from Persona 3, 4 and 5, as well as the female protaganist from Persona 3 Portable, so should be a blast. I sunk over 100 hours into the original game, so am really looking forward to this. There is a ton of day 1 DLC but none of it is needed, in fact the personas you can buy actually break the games difficulty, it becomes way too easy with them. The extra characters you can download as dungeon navigators are nice if you have a particular desperation to have them in the game, but I'll be sticking with Rise, Fuuka and Futaba I think (though I may end up shelling out for the twins from P5). The DLC thats worth having is the music, which adds battle themes from 3, 4 and 5, plus 3 Portable, 4 Golden and Q. These 3 packs are free for the first month after release though. There is a free 3DS theme on the eshop now as well. Only downer is that there is no english dub this time, I guess Atlus are not expecting this to sell enough to justify the cost. It's a shame as I usually play my JRPGs with a japanese soundtrack, but the Persona games are a rare series where I prefer the english dub. Hope some people pick this up and enjoy it, I'm hoping Amazon ship it a little bit early, but as long as I have it for release day, I'll be happy.
  6. Just got the last issue of Edgetm, and I thought this game deserved its own thread - even though it'll probably never reach our shores. Or the Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo as it is known in Japan. The game is a spin-off in the Pokémon franchise, in which players work with a talking Pikachu to solve mysteries, and is being developed by Creatures inc - the guys behind the Earthbound and Pokémon Ranger series. The game follows a rather peculiar talking pikachu who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city. Meitantei Pikachu is an adventure game in which players control Tim Goodman as he works together with Detective Pikachu to solve various mysteries. This is accomplished by examining scenes, finding potential clues, and speaking with people and Pokémon to uncover new information. A lot like the investigative parts of the Ace Attorney series. The game was released on the Nintendo eShop on February 3, 2016 in Japan. Unfortunately there's no word of an overseas release as yet.   7. New thread, to avoid mega-threads... A baffled Dinovaldo Glavenus, yesterday. Capcom recently announced Monster Hunter X (that's "cross"), an upcoming 3DS title that uses the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate engine and has flashy moves similar to the Frontier games. Since then, they’ve shared additional information on the game. The plans for Monster Hunter X began sometime around the production of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Capcom wanted to bring out more of a “festive” feeling that’s not in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, so they decided to bring back villages from past titles, and add four main monsters, instead of the usual one-per-title. Monster Hunter X is being developed with the concept of having your very own hunt that comes from the two features of “Hunting Maneuvers X Hunting Style”. Hunters will have access to new special moves and actions that look pretty flashy. Capcom say that these features will be the main attraction of Monster Hunter X. “Hunting Maneuvers” (or Arts) are special moves that range from being able to perform a powerful attack to a monster, to providing yourself with enhancements or buffs, and healing other nearby Hunters. “Hunting Style” is another feature that Monster Hunter X is adding to the game, that lets you turn moments of danger into stylish actions. This feature plays a big part in letting players hunt with their very own style. Capcom have prepared numerous "Hunting Arts" for each weapon, but there are also some “basic Hunting Arts” that can be used with any weapon, and you’ll get to choose from them all. This time around, the main village of Monster Hunter is called Verna Village. And the game will also feature various villages from past Monster Hunter titles, including Yukumo Village from Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (sweet!). While most Monster Hunter games have one flagship monster on the covers, it looks like Monster Hunter X will have four, as the ones shown in the above image are marked as the “four major main monsters”. The four main monsters won’t simply appear over time as you advance through the game with one being stronger than the other, but they’re actually all along the same rank. They’re called the “Elite Four” among the developers. They are Gammoth ( a fanged beast), the rather cool Glavenus (a brute wyvern), Astalos (a flying wyvern), and a still unnamed leviathan-type.   9. The basics of The Snack World TreJarers are to find rare items slumbering deep inside dungeons. The main game cycle is going back and forth between the base and dungeons to proceed through the game. You prepare equipment and items at the base before going to a dungeon. Then at the dungeon, you’ll try to find rare items slumbering deep within. Featured in The Snack World are random dungeons where the layout changes each time the player enters. The type of dungeons vary, including a rocky area, forest, and temple. Scary bosses lie deep inside the dungeons such as the Kraken. Other charming monsters are introduced, which are Buttery, Scorpion, Yeti, Mermaid, Penguin Knight, Mimic, Merman and Clone. Selecting Jara, which is the term for weapon here, is very important. Different Jaras should be prepared to be ready for a variety of monsters which have different affinities against Jaras. Jaras and Snacks can be scanned which will give benefits. Jaras are very important items in The Snack World. They are normally miniaturized while being carried, but can be increased in size during attacks. Snacks are crystal plates that contain sealed monsters and characters. A limited Jara: Crystal Sword Alpha will be available in limited amounts of early game copies. Up to six Jara items can be carried at once. The Jaras can also be freely assembled. Snacks allows summoning of monsters and characters, so you should collect them to go on an adventure with yout favorite characters. Benefits of scanning a Jara toy include activating unique skills that will aid in quests, obtaining items that strengthen weapons, and unlocking special quests. Meanwhile, by scanning Snacks, you can obtain Chap’s bandanna and unlock quests related to Piggy. Each piece of the Jara equipment is grouped under brand names. The currently known ones are: Fairy Electronics, Clanarine, Britannia Enchant and Peffany. Players can enjoy their own way of collecting branded items, whether focusing on their favorite brands or combining from various brands. The franchise is a "hyper casual fantasy" that is set in the Snack World, a traditional fantasy world combined with convenience stores, smartphones, and other elements of the modern world. It revolves around the adventures of Chup, a wandering hero, who is determined to get revenge against Large-Scale Leisure Facilities after it destroyed his village in response to the villagers refusing to allow eviction of the village by the former. Madly in love with King Majesty[a]'s daughter, Princess Melora, he fulfills her selfish wishes by going on quests, accompanied by an inelegant witch, Mayone; a muscular warrior, Pepperon; a goblin-like creature, Gob-san; and a female pig-nosed dragon, Francene Level-5 first announced The Snack World TreJarers back in 2015.   10. Anyone else downloaded the demo for this? I love games that combine a card game with another genre; Sword & Poker on iOS is a particular favourite of mine and I've been on the lookout for something similar ever since. The demo is lovely, with fun dialogue and several interesting game mechanics, and it's not quite as simple as 'play solitaire, your horse runs'. It's out on 5th May apparently, about £6.
  11. This one got a bit lost amidst all the Nintendo Direct news from last week... A black and white puzzle platformer, with a simple but bold presentation and with a very strong core mechanic: you create boxes in different directions from your, well... box-shaped-hero (Hakoboi actually means litt. ''Box Boy''), to interact with the world and solve puzzles. And you jump. And that's it. It looks so simple at first, and it's the classic game that's difficult to explain by words as is easy to grasps while watching the trailer or, better, playing it. By the end of the video this core mechanic gets applied in some astounding ways, opening up an inordinate amount of possibilities, driven by clever game and level design. As per Hal's trademark development skills. A Euro release is a big unknown at the moment.

New location: Guatelatio A city that has long been prosperous, Guatelatio sits at the entrance to the highway that leads to the Temple of Earth and the Holy Land. Home to the Crystal Orthodoxy’s headquarters, as well as numerous villas and estates belong to especially faithful aristocrats and various other prominent families, at the northern edge of town sits the Gate of Faith, an important military institution tasked with defending the Holy Land that employs the “Orthodox Knights,” a group that the Orthodoxy holds in high regards. When the Duchy of Eternia was in its prime, Guatelatio managed to rid itself of the Orthodox Knights and barely attain recognition as autonomous entity, but with the Orthodoxy and Duchy’s relationship taking a turn for the peaceful, the city eventually becomes the former’s official capitol city, bringing with it renewed construction of the cathedral and a return to bustling life in general. There were plans to hold the signing ceremony for the peace treaty in Guatelatio, but things don’t go quite as planned…. New character: Magnolia Arch A "Ba'al Buster" from the moon, she has a sociable and daredevil personality with a habit of saying words in French. She bears the weight of being the last of her kind after a Demon Lord unexpectedly appeared. In combat, Magnolia is able to use the bravely second ability, which allows her to freeze time for short periods. !!WARNING: Bravely Default spoilers!! New details about Agnes Oblige Agnes traveled the world with her allies in years past, overcoming numerous troubles and ultimately driving back the Great Void that brought Luxendarc to the brink of calamity. In the wake of the decade-long Passion Period, she miraculously puts the then-collapsing Crystal Orthodoxy back together, ultimately becoming the only fourth pope the Orthodoxy has ever seen and the first one to rise to such a position in centuries. Not only is she on friendly terms with many important players, but she also enjoys massive popularity with the common people and has put her heart and soul into realizing lasting peace between the Orthodoxy and Eternia.   14. You know what Rhythm Heaven is by now. Or Rhythm Paradise. Or Rhythm Tengoku. Or リズム天国. Whatever. A compilation of sorts was announced in the Japanese Direct: Contains 70 returning favourites from the GBA, the DS and the Wii, as well as 30 new favourites. Including Karate Man OBVIOUSLY, and Lockstep which is AMAZING, and the Wrestler dude from the Wii version which is SO GOOD. Confirmed for a 2015 release for Japan for now, cross everything for it to be localised. EVERYTHING. THIS. BEAT. IS NON. STOP.

  16. The latest Ace Attorney spin-off game, The Great Ace Attorney (Dai Gyakuten Saiban) was just recently released in Japan. But it seems like Capcom aren’t resting on their laurels yet – in fact, the next mainline Ace Attorney game has just been announced! Famitsu revealed that the title will even be playable at Tokyo Game Show later this month (!!). According to the magazine, the game takes place outside of Japan. Phoenix Wright has come to an as yet unnamed country (probably Nepal) for a reason, but he gets involved with another case. Residents of the country apparently believe in the spirits of the dead. A big Water Mirror (mizukagami) can be seen in their courtrooms on the floor. On the upper 3DS screen, there are images and words floating in the water. The touch screen seems to show part of a testimony and the option to present something. Famitsu also introduces us to a boy who goes by the name (roughly) Bokto Tsuani. Bokto is a monk-in-training who works as a tour guide to make some money. It’s said that after starting his tour-guide-talk, he can’t be stopped. It’s again a 3DS exclusive. And the game is supposedly spearheaded by producers Motohide Eshiro and Takeshi Yamazaki, both of them series veterans. More info soon.

  18. Bit of a strange one this game. But the fact that NoE decided to release it over here - albeit only on the eShop - got my attention. Originally released as Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind in Japan in December 2013, this is an action game developed by Spike Chunsoft for the Nintendo 3DS. It is set to be released this May in North America and Europe under the name Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains with Atlus being the publisher as a eShop exclusive. The game follows the story of the anime, beginning from the year 845, when the titans first attacked and demolished the walls. The story of Attack On Titan centers around the adventures of Eren Yaeger, his foster sister, Mikasa Ackerman, and their childhood friend, Armin Arlert. After the wall which protects their hometown of Shinganshina is breached by Titans, Eren watches in horror as one of them eats his mother. Vowing to kill all Titans, Eren enlists in the military, along with his friends. Five years later, the three cadet graduates are positioned in Trost District, one of the border towns jutting out of Wall Rose, when the Titans attack once more... The player initially controls series' protagonist Eren, but as the game progresses, Mikasa, Armin, and other members of the Survey Corps become playable. The game ends at the point where the anime ends as well. Trailer: Japanese overview trailer: Box art: Looks like an interesting action game with a twist, albeit rather unpolished. If the price is right, I might pick it up, as I'm a fan of the anime series, and I like weird unpolished games.
  19. Is anyone playing this? I was a fan of the F2P version on iOS and this new paid version on 3DS nails it. I'm having to relearn how to play in a new way though. Where in the iOS version there was a big advantage to single colour teams this version makes you pay very close attention to the makeup of levels both in enemy types and available gems (Which don't always match up in easy to beat ways). It's extremely well presented and has that Nintendo polish Plus it has an entire second game. Puzzle and Dragons Z to play as well. I paid 25 quid for the cart on Amazon which is an utter bargain
  20. So after months of not touching my consoles or handhelds I finally took the courage to start up my Wii and play Skyward Sword. Well I wish I could say that but the only reason I did so was because my video card crapped out on me and thus rendering my PC useless other than to: Porn, Facebook and Rllmuk (yes, in that order). I'm now 20 hours in to SS and it made me realize how much of a void there was for me as far as pure gaming glee goes. It's been said a thousand times already but Nintendo games do have a certain unique charm to them that make most, if not all, of their titles a joy to play. Even if the latest Zelda is a bit by the numbers it's still a much better experience than most games. Not that other recent titles are bad or anything but there's just something about playing a game by yourself, without achievements (glorified grinds more like!), no online hassles, and NGC era graphics all while waving your arms around like a loon. Simpler times no? Anyway I digress... What I'm saying is: I've rediscovered the Nintendo fanboy inside but fear for what I have been missing out on all these years. Especially on (3)DS and Wii. I'm looking forward to the new Pokemon and Luigi's Mansion games but what else is out there that you would consider essential titles for these systems, past or upcoming?   21. In Luigi's Mansion, the main story is played out over four stages, with players able to also access a training room and a gallery at the laboratory of Professor E. Gadd between stages. In each stage, players control Luigi as he explores the mansion's rooms and hunts down the ghosts that lay within them, acquiring keys to get through locked doors and eventually dealing with a boss ghost hidden at the end of the stage, with more rooms becoming accessible as each stage is completed. To assist him in his task, Luigi uses a flashlight and two inventions supplied by E. Gadd - the Poltergust 3000, a specially modified, high powered vacuum cleaner; and the Game Boy Horror, a parody of Nintendo's Game Boy Color. Luigi's Mansion was originally released as a Gamecube launch game back in 2001 developed and published by Nintendo. It is the first title in the franchise in which Luigi is the main character, instead of Mario, with players controlling him as he explores the titular mansion, searching for Mario and dealing with ghosts that lie within its rooms by capturing them. I know this has been out for 6 months already but as it's on PS+ at the moment (EDIT: Not as of 8th May it ain't) it's getting some sporadic discussion across various threads and I reckon it needs a topic of its own. (I have searched but can't find anything.) For those who don't know what it is, gameplay description nicked from Wikipedia below: I'm on my third escape at the moment and I'm really struggling to make sense of the game in my head. I know I'm enjoying it, and I'm very involved in the story and characters now, but it's just like nothing I've played before. In some ways it reminds me of Phoenix Wright (first-person dialogue, reams of text, investigating scenes) but with a lot more logic required. Unfortunately, that's not really my strong point but I'm going to persevere nonetheless. Also, on a related note - is 999 on DS any good? Worth tracking down after I've finished this? Anyway, the main point of this is - if you have a Vita and PS+, download this now. (EDIT: Not free anymore. Buy it instead.)
  23. What Whaa-a-a-aaat; no thread for this? In WarioWare Gold, the player is tasked to complete "microgames", which are small mini-games that take the player must complete in an extremely short time sequence. If the player succeeds in a microgame, the game moves onto the next. If the player fails, they lose one of four lives. If the player runs out of lives, the game ends and the player's high score is displayed, which is determined by how many microgames were passed. During gameplay, the game will naturally speed up every few microgames. So far, so WarioWare then. The microgames featured in Gold return from multiple games in the series, including WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames! , WarioWare: Twisted and WarioWare Touched! . In addition to this, new microgames will be added as well. These microgames involve pressing buttons, tilting the system, touching the touch screen, and blowing on the system's microphone. The game will be released for the 3DS in Europe later this Summer.

Going in blind is the best way to experience those games! Source Announced at Anime Expo 2015, seemingly out of nowhere. Expected Summer 2016 for Playstation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Following Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward, the announcement of the third game in the Zero Escape series is quite a shock. After poor sales of VLR, the series' creator, Kotaro Uchikoshi took to Twitter with a dedicated English-language account to explain the current situation - even looking into Kickstarter, which at the time couldn't be utilised by residents of Japan. Then, silence; Uchikoshi was working on some other products, including the writing credit for an anime ("Punch Line", which seems to revolve around looking at pants - watch it on Crunchyroll! or, don't), and the Zero Escape trail went quiet. One day earlier in the year, this happened - a seemingly-random dump of information that was quickly picked apart. A website (4infinity.co) which contained some snippets hidden in its metadata. A website that now links to the Aksys Twitch channel, where the game was announced. Not much more info to go on, but I'll keep this updated as news rolls in. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward, the first two entries in the Zero Escape series, are visual novel-style room escape adventures*, and are best experienced as spoiler-free as possible. It's generally recommended to play them in order, though I can confirm it's not essential as someone who played VLR first. Both games begin with a protagonist who awakes to find themselves trapped in an unfamiliar location, wearing a strange watch-like device on their wrist. Progress is broadly split into two parts - Room Escape puzzles and Visual Novel segments. For those who haven't played a Room Escape-style game before - put simply, you're trapped in a room, and must solve puzzles to escape, by hunting for clues and interacting with the environment. The Visual Novel segments are what really bring the game to life, though - unravelling the mystery of how you came to be trapped in a mysterious location, discovering the other eight people who share your fate, and seeking a way out. Your choices during these segments will decide your fate, potentially that of your companions, and perhaps even six billion others.   25. Development on Monster Hunter Stories began about two years ago. However, it’s a project that’s been five to six years in the making, and it’s something that came about due to some fans wanting an RPG set in the MH universe. Monster Hunter has focused on strengthening the player character, but it’s always been about the monsters. In this game, there are plenty of people who like monsters, but it is more of a sport to use them. The team took an approach to allow those who love the Monster Hunter world itself to experience that as well. Monster Hunter Stories is targeted at players of all ages (meh... ) who think they will enjoy the game. It’s for both series veterans and newcomers alike. Stories has pleasing visuals with a plot that never gets too serious, and features catchy designs with a simple approach (double meh.. ) to help achieve this. Monster Hunter Stories makes use of a Triangle Battle System including “Power,” “Technique,” and “Speed” commands. Originally, the commands included more complex ones like “Fight”, “Run”, etc. However, at one point, the staff took a simpler approach with turn-based combat and decided to base it on a triangle (triple meh... ). Monster Hunter Stories’ battles aren’t just based on luck to win though. Monsters have unique traits and capabilities. For instance, velocipreys have a “speed” habit. Often, there is a link between the monsters’ image and their resulting special habit. Monster Hunter Stories is true to an RPG, yet keeps that flavour of developing strategies to hunt monsters by researching them - like previous games. The protagonist can also battle alongside monsters now. These monsters are named “Otomon”. Although the protagonist can collect many monsters, he/she can only fight with one at a time in a battle. You’ll have the ability to change the monster (in the party) that is battling, though. While the protagonist battles with the monster, in the end it's the otomon that does the brunt of the battle. It’s said that if the otomon is the “attacker,” then the protagonist is the “Almighty Supporter”. Riding monsters will be possible in Monster Hunter Stories too. If the bond between the player and their otomon is high enough, this element of the game will be possible. All otomon have their own distinct traits and personalities. Players can build their bond by traveling together, playing with the monsters, talking to the monsters, and using them (what?). There will be new locations to stay true to the adventure aspect in an RPG. In Monster Hunter Stories, the protagonist will form bonds with monsters as a rider. So what would he think of the hunters? This will be a problem and question often addressed; a depiction of their different viewpoints of the matter within the Monster Hunter universe. The story is about the protagonist’s growth to adulthood within a world of monsters in an ever changing environment. The plot also involves how hunters and riders will cope with each other. The mainline Monster Hunter games deal with monster quests, but what if the monsters were (starting) to disappear? There are people who think life would be easier, and those that do not. As a final message, the developers ask fans to look forward to a game that both series veterans and aficionados of the series can enjoy. This title brings the world of Monster Hunter to all ages. It was an action game before, but now it’s an RPG.
