  1. So, we've got Inscryption coming up on 2021, and it looks absolutely amazing. Here's the trailer! I'm going to be completely honest with you and admit that I absolutely love these sorts of thing, and the visual presentation is so far up my street it's got itself lodged in my colon. If anyone is interested in a short sneak peak of the game, the prototype Sacrifices Must Be Made is available to download here, and I would absolutely recommend giving it a go. It's a 20mb download, and isn't particularly long, giving you a single opponent to play against. The game has a singularly disturbing feel to it, and for something in such a primitive state which was slapped together in it's entirely in 48 hours, the actual card game is extremely good. So, I'm super proper hyped about this one. edit Just to add a bit more about the game, since that's what people will want to read about, I'm going to talk about the mechanisms below - but about the situation that you find yourself in, which will be sort of revealed in the Prototype. This isn't a traditional card game like Magic: the Gathering where two people with two equal decks face off against one another - it's a specifically designed single player game with card mechanics. The most important thing to grasp is that you'll know what your opponent is going to play and where a turn ahead of where it happens, and the core of the game is navigating that puzzle. There's no economy in the game - all cards have a number of blood marks between zero and theoretically four. In order to play a card, you must sacrifice a number of cards you already have in play to the value of the blood marks of the card you want to play. All cards are considered equal for these purposes - the only exception to the rule is the Cat who can be "sacrificed" without leaving play, making it a permanent resource as long as it's in play - but having no offensive capability, it's doomed to die if something is opposing it. The upshot of all this is that you need to play out zero blood mark animals in order to be able to afford anything else, but they're universally terrible and will due at the weapons or claws of almost anything else in the game, so unless you're desperate you need to use them or lose them, or be prepared to throw them away in a chump-block. You win by dealing damage to your opponent, and if your cards are opposed by enemy cards then you do damage to those instead. The number of points you need to win is... variable, and the scores are placed on a weighing scale and when your opponents scale touches the table they lose. The consequence to this is that if you're scoring points off one another about evenly, nobody is making any progress towards victory. Your opponent may offer you a mechanism to "right the scales" if you're losing badly by... passing you a knife. But think carefully before you pick that fucker up. It's a desperate measure, trust me. At the end of each round you get to pick a new card up (as it pretty traditional in these games), but obviously in the prototype deck building is exceptionally limited and you only get two choices overall - but those choices did make a difference to how I played the game for sure.

So yeah, this came out on the day of the VGAs and no one seemed to notice... Considering I'm just playing Transistor again (never finished it, started from the beginning), I'm actually quite hyped to see what they can craft in a Diabloesque style... EDIT - more info: available on Epic store, £18 for Early Access. Premise is: you are the son of Hades, trying to escape hell. In a neat conceptual twist for a rougelike/dungeon crawler, you are actually ascending to try and escape. Ever time you die you are returned to the lowest level. They are intent on continuing their hallmarks of customisation/flexible play styles, super cool world building and intriguing narrative/story. I only heard of it thanks to noclip, who have an excellent series following it through it early-access development... I'm probably going to buy it after I finish the above video.

The only card game I've ever really given the light of day before this was Duelyst and while this is much easier to pick up and play it is by no means any more forgiving. Just now for example I was on an almost flawless run through Act 1 with some of the best items the game was kind enough bestow on me, only for me to get completely rekt halfway through the second act. I've only managed to defeat the second boss during one of the daily runs and it keeps destroying me on the standard quest mode, yet I keep coming back for more. Brutal but fun! So if you're up for a singleplayer card game with easy to understand mechanics that also features a terrific soundtrack then definitely give this a go. I know some of you already own this so I'm curious to learn what strategies you've been using!

Cause no-one seems to bother to make a proper thread and/or update the ones in existence, and since the original Xbox Psychonauts is one of my all-time favourite games, I'm making a thread myself. Psychonauts 2 is the long awaited sequel to the cult classic Psychonauts, which was an awesome 3D action-platformer that saw players litterally dive into the minds of different people, leading to a colourful and insane world in which the imagination of the creators seemed to be the only limitation. The first game came out in 2005, so it's been over 15 years since this incredibly unique psychological platformer hit consoles. Thankfully, Psychonauts 2 - after all its development/publisher niggles - now really seems to be happening, and Double Fine, the creators behind the series and many other unique titles, is aiming to make it bigger and better than the original in every way. Psychonauts 2 was first officially announced back in 2015, and since then it's been a very long and very bumpy road to release, with numerous setbacks and compromises Double Fine had to make for the project. After a successful crowdfunding campaign and an acquisition from a larger company, Double Fine is all set to make Psychonauts 2 a reality sometime in 2021. There were times when it wasn't sure the project was even going to survive, but Psychonauts 2 is now pretty much inevitable at this point. The story of the sequel picks up a few years after the end of the first game, when Razputin Aquato, trained acrobat and powerful young psychic, has realized his life long dream of joining the international psychic espionage organization known as the Psychonauts. But now these psychic super spies are in trouble. Their leader hasn't been the same since he was kidnapped, and what's worse, there's a mole hiding in the Psychonauts' headquarters. Raz must use all his powers to stop the mole before they execute their secret plan — to bring the murderous psychic villain, Maligula, back from the dead!     Disco Elysium

    So Disco Elysium has finally got a release date. Isometric urban fantasy/new weird detective RPG. OCTOBER 15TH!!! Devs are saying it'll be 60+ hours of sprawling isometric role playing goodness. I won't lie to you, I'm pretty excited by this. There's been an absolute deluge of isometric RPGs these last few years but this one looks pretty original.
  8. Discord Server I reckon Valve could well start to wrap up the PC game publishing market over the next couple of years. I can't be arsed to buy PC games any more because they cost a bit too much and I just don't generally have time. I don't bother to look at the PC shelf in Game any more. But I've bought 3 games off Steam in the last 4 or 5 months (Sin Eps, Darwinia, X3:Reunion), for which the developers probably got more money than they would from a box anyway. I've hardly played them either, because of the time thing but I don't mind buying something for $20 which I'll just have a quick spin on every so often. It's genius for convenience and price. And the fact that every HL2 or CS:s player is right in front of the advertisig channel is a nice bonus for the developers.
  9. STOP THREAD COMING TO PS4 AND XBONE It bloody well could be. This will be the next simulator from the guys who bought you netKar Pro and Ferrari Virtual Academy... Its also moddable.. Indeed netKar and FVA are considered very decent sims but theres little in the way of pictures or track details so its more about putting it out there. Heres the first movie... And it doesn't say much most other games don't do. But one thing that will froth the racing heads is their first car sign up and for that i can show you a movie.. Excited? Well i can tell you the game will feature graphical details such as Full defered rendering with shadows, HDR, bloom and even words like AO which i'm not sure what they even mean and word on the net is this is THE sim to watch. And its due in 2012, although may likely go down the same Beta route both Rfactor and pCARS as gone.

  12. Microsoft's Reward scheme. It's alright. In about 15 months I've made just over £240 from it and I've not been doing it religiously. It's not the gravy train it once was, but it's still a simple way to get Xbox credit in return for a good use of your time while sitting on the toilet, a tenner a month or so is easy enough to attain. Interested? Of course you are! Go here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/rewards sign up using the MS login you use for your Xbox, follow the instructions. Click on everything available for points under https://account.microsoft.com/rewards/ and also do the desktop PC Bing searches to finish off - for those it's easiest to search for a letter under image search, and middle click on 30 different options. You can do it on mobile in a browser desktop mode, for that just put in a search term 30 characters long and delete a letter, search, delete a letter and so on until you've done the searches. Once you're earned 500 points (takes a day or two, there are all sorts of welcome offers to hoover up) you'll be at Level 2 and be able to earn direct from mobile searches as well (again, via Bing - app or set it to default search on your browser), and that's your lot. Daily, you get 3 points per mobile search (up to 60) and 3 points per desktop search (up to 90), along with three "daily sets" of things to click on. They're usually 10 points each, but there will be a couple of occasions per week where it's a quiz on one of them for 30 points or similar. Do those every day, and you can earn extra points for "streaks" where every few days you'll get a bonus for your streak, which is 15 points per day no matter what really: Streak 1, Day 3 (3 days) = 45 pts Streak 2, Day 8 (5 days) = 75 pts Streak 3, Day 13 (5 days) = 75 pts Streak 4, Day 20 (7 days) = 105 pts Streak 5, Day 27 (7 days) = 105 pts Streak 6, Day 35 (7 days) = 105 pts Streak 7, Day 44 (10 days) = 150 pts There's often additional stuff to click on daily and you can also pick up a number of points a day by using the Xbox Rewards app on the Xbox One, but that's tended to be 15 points per day so is a bit crap. You can get a couple of thousand for buying particular games or hardware, but sales generally beat doing that. You also get some points back for any game you buy from the MS store regardless. The occasional email gets sent with links for additional points, usually only 50 and they're only once few weeks at most. All in all, you can get an absolute minimum of 180 points per day just from a couple of minutes searching and clicking, with some extras on top. To what end? Rewards! Live Gold subs, Game Pass subs, Xbox Credit, Microsoft Credit, and things from other vendors that are really poor value. You can easily fund a month of Game Pass every month (6800 points, 17000 for 3 months), I usually save points for credit, of which Xbox and MS Credit are identical so pick whatever makes sense (currently they're 5850 or 4410 points for a fiver, respectively - the latter is on a 30% off deal 'til the 15th of October). As of the other month, any credit gets deposited directly into the redeeming account and you've got 3 months to spend it so you can build up 30 quid in your account if you like but then you have to spend some, but it gives plenty of time to hang on and see what comes up in the various sales. Gold and Game Pass are still supplied as codes to use anywhere. Anyway, the sums above only add up to a fiver of credit a month at best though, but you can near double it up. You're allowed 5 accounts per household, and if you set up a pair of accounts as a family you can transfer 5000 points per month between them. The only thing I'd recommend is using a separate phone number to verify each if you're asked, and don't ever set up a kids account as it's a right pain in the arse with the age restrictions. If you have two pairs of accounts, you can use the other pair to gift games to yourself if you go for credit (a code for the game gets emailed). If you want to rapidly gain points it's a bit finicky but you can use a VPN and pretend you're in the US, where they generate points almost twice as fast as we can. Switch back to UK, deposit points to the paired account, switch back. Might get your account banned doing that, but it'll only be the rewards part of it so there's little to lose. Here are my accounts, this is after exactly the first two weeks in September which is when the Streaks were added to the UK side of it. I use the second account to feed 5000 points to the first every month, and I'll probably use some of the slack to buy Gamepass subs. Not sure why the second account has earned so few by this point in comparison. Same sort of thing here with another couple of accounts, but the second account is gaining points from the US side of it and you can see the difference - almost a couple of thousand points more in 14 days. Lost that streak the day after, bloody timezones did for me. Again, second account feeds 5k points per month to the first but getting it to work was a bit of a pain given the functionality wasn't available on the US side so lots of region switching in the MS account was needed as well. Think it just works now, they got the transfer functionality added the other week. There you go then, that's it.   13. So hey. Here's a sweet early access game I've been playing. It's set in a (fairly) low fantasy medieval randomised world and has you leading a band of sellswords as they travel from settlement to settlement taking contracts and dying horribly. It's like an Abercrombian Xcom with elements of Mount & Blade thrown in for good measure. Really charming graphical style too. The full release is happening early 2017 and will feature Stellaris-style 'late game crises' with the world being thrown into turmoil from orc/undead invasions & wars between noble houses and such.   19. Preface: We have a nonspecific MOBA thread, but it's impenetrable and a bit dead at the best of times. This is an attempt to get some Mukkers to try Dota 2, and help those looking to get into it to organise themselves and ask questions without fear of being scoffed at. “Why should I care about Dota 2? MOBAs are stupid/scary/impenetrable. The people that play them are weird, unlike us hypercool non-MOBA playing videogamers. Hurry up and Make Half Life 3. Hats are dumb, etc.” DOTA2 is the most popular game on Steam, and growing. It’s free to play, can be played on a fairly low-end PC, and looks lovely on a high-end PC. There are no (and will never be) any “pay to win” elements. It’s got a Cockney porcupine, a guy who can throw an entire ghost ship at people, and a barely disguised Dr Kleiner from Half Life 2 stomping around in a mechsuit summoning hordes of tiny robots to nip at the ankles of the enemy. It’s silly, funny, deadly serious, fun, frustrating and elating in equal measure, but most of all it’s rewarding to learn. It’s as much a team “sport” as it is a videogame. If you are avoiding giving it a go based on any preconceived ideas you may have, you're robbing yourself of a brilliant game. “Alright, alright. But why should I care? Valve should make Half Life 3. Beli3ve!” Dota 2 is a Valve game, through and through. Whilst it may at first seem far removed from any of their previous efforts, which it is, it’s also quite possibly their best game by some margin. The underlying game, the rules of which were defined in the original DOTA, was sculpted by years of experimentation and balance tweaks. Valve don’t mess with this, they simply add a triple-A sheen, a robust infrastructure and a brilliant business model. This is a solid gold chunk of game carved from millions of hours of player data over many years, balanced nearly to perfection, with a massive dollop of Valve flair on top. And just think, the more virtual crap you buy from the Dota 2 shop, the more development money Valve has to spend on Half Life 3 making new badges. “OK, I’m still here. So uhh, what is it?” “DOTA” stands for “Defense of the ancients”. Though "Dota 2" is simply Dota 2, probably for legal reasons. There are two teams of five players, starting at opposite sides of a map. Like most sports, the map/field/pitch layout never changes. Each team has a base, inside which is a structure called an ancient. You must defend this from attacks by the enemy team, whilst mounting your own attacks upon theirs. Whichever team destroys the opposing ancient first wins the game. That’s it. Not so complicated, right? There’s a bit more to it than that, but nothing you can’t pick up by bumbling through a couple of games. You control a single character (and occasionally pets or minions) so the game is much more akin to Diablo than Starcraft. You don't build bases or level up tech trees, you don't research stuff, you can't get a cultural victory. Moment to moment it's nothing but fast, deep, dirty combat and frantic "farming", i.e. grinding gold and XP as quickly as possible. The only way to win is to smash your enemy in the face until they fall down dead, or help the bloke standing next to you do it. There are 100+ characters (or “heroes”) to pick from when you start a match. Each has their own set of strengths, weaknesses and abilities. Different team compositions and match-ups grant the game an endless variety of possibilities and a depth of strategy that most games can only dream of. Think of it like a five-a-side match where you can pick any player from any club in the premier league for any position. And they've all got magical powers. Daunting, but exciting. Right? Unless you hate football, in which case think of it like a team-based multiplayer videogame with 100+ characters. Daunting, but exciting. Right? “So I need to learn 100 bloody characters before I can play the game?” No. Recently Valve has implemented what it calls the “limited heroes” pool. Essentially, they’ve taken 20 easy-to-learn heroes and created a game mode where you can only pick from these. As there are 10 players per round, it will not take too long for you to see each of these heroes in action. You could play 20 rounds as a different character each round if you like, or pick one you like the look of and stick with him/her/it. You can sit in this pool for as long as you like. Hell, you can sit in it forever if you wish. “Will everyone shout at me for not knowing what I’m doing?” Yes. But Valve has made efforts to match you with people in a similar situation. If you wind up in a game with people who have a few wins under their belt and feel like screaming at you instead of being helpful, they're the ones playing it wrong. There’s a mute button and a report button, both of which work wonders. The important thing to remember is that nobody really knows how to play the game in the early matchups, so concentrate on improving your own game. Take constructive advice from teammates, try your best to play with people you know rather than randoms, and try to experiment and have fun. People only see the number of wins you've got against your name (and only if you turn that on!) so don’t take losses too badly. You will lose your matches at least half of the time if the matchmaking works as intended. But if you can improve your own game in some way every match, you’re always winning. The matchmaking, despite Valve's best intentions, can often throw up some "interesting" oddities, so try to play with people you know and can communicate with whenever possible. “Who should I play as first? What’s a “lane”? What are the different roles? How do I buy items, which items should I buy? Can I Meepo? Why is everyone screaming in Russian? Can you recommend a long, complicated guide for me to read before I get stuck in?” Look, don’t worry about it. I’m not going to put any detailed guides, tips or suggestions in this OP. There are far better sources for that. Pick someone you like the look of, and if you decide you don’t like them, pick someone else next time. It really doesn't matter early on. Chances are everyone else is doing the same, though they might shout at you for daring not to pick a character which complements their own. But fuck ‘em, pick the guy with the sweet beard or the silly glasses or the funny name just for that reason. You have to start somewhere. If you want to take advice or ask for help from your teammates, go right ahead. The limited heroes pool offerings are: The game makes you run through a couple of dopey tutorials before you can play properly. These teach you how to move around, how to buy basic items, how to level up and how to use skills. When you get into a “proper” game, you’ll be expected to choose which items to buy and which skills to level up. This can seem extremely daunting, but there’s an app for that. You can actually pick a community created “build” from a list, which works like a template, telling you exactly which items to buy and skills to pick. Anyone can upvote or downvote these builds, so pick the highest rated build and use that. Some of them come with extra tooltip advice too, which is handy. Don’t worry about barrelling through guides just yet. That will come later. For a new player, even the best and simplest guides contain too much info to take in at once or put into practice. Instead, play with at least one person who can answer your questions, and don’t be afraid to ask! Think of it like Dark Souls. You need to learn through doing, through experience. To use my own brother as an example, he reluctantly agreed to play with me last weekend, and quickly found himself having fun. He asked plenty of questions as we played, and he was open to having his mistakes and his successes pointed out to him, and he took advice keenly. In just two or three games he had picked up enough of the game to finish with a respectable score and be an asset to his team, and most importantly he enjoyed it. And oh yes, everyone is screaming in Russian because it’s Dota 2. Welcome to Dota 2. Either learn Russian ("cyka" is "bitch", I think) or team up with friends to reduce the non-English speaking element from your team. There are however generic ways to communicate (there’s a chat wheel) so you can overcome the language barrier to some extent. “Doesn’t it take forever to get into? Don’t I have to play it for hundreds of hours before I’m any good? I don’t have time for that.” During your first game you will feel overwhelmed, there’s no way around that. But you can play as much or as little as you like. Once you've got the basics down, you can easily play a couple of games a week and still get something meaningful out of it. There's no overarching skill-levelling besides your own as a human being. Some of my most enjoyable games were very early victories when I had just begun to understand certain parts of the game. There is much enjoyment in that moment of understanding, however small it may be in the grand scheme of things. “OK, I’m ready to take the Dota 2 challenge. Gulp. Where do I start?” Well, first you need a Steam account, you probably already have one of those. Then you need Dota 2. The game is chock full of esports features, including the ability to connect to a "live" game (there's a short delay to avoid cheating) and choose between different commentators. Sometimes these games are free to connect to, and sometimes you have to buy a season pass to gain access. Viewers of these tournaments can often receive extra items for buying a season pass, and very rare items are sometimes awarded to a viewer at the end of a match. You can also connect your Steam account to your twitch account and watch the games via twitch instead, and receive the same benefits.
