Have you ever found a game too hard?

Chalk up another one for Bloodborne. It's a shame as I *love* the aesthetic, and it's clearly a brilliant brilliant game, but I've not even reached the first boss. It's so unforgiving, and I don't have the patience to keep trying. Because of this I've never bothered even trying Dark Souls.

What games did you complete? 2019 Edition

    1. Spider-Man (7th Jan) Wow. Took a while to really grasp all the controls, but loved the slow and steady introduction of moves, the FABULOUS story/acting/unnerving brilliance of the facial animation. But man, the controls, when they click you are a superhero. This was glorious. And so tight, no filler or bullshit. Just 25 hours of great gameplay. I even enjoyed the stealth. 10/10

    PSX/PS1 rare gems

I bloody loved this. Put a lot of hours in to it. Only thing I really remember was the battle mechanics - vague memories of a sphere and targeting particular body parts. And getting lost in it for hours at a time. Would love a remake.

    Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

First of I imagine many stupid questions... I have tweaked my controls and saved them under a named profile. But they’re not being used. How do I set it as the active controls?

Sh****st game you ever got bought

So my story here isn’t so much a shit game present, rather a shit game present experience. Picture the scene... It is some time in the mid-eighties, and a young Steven has been hearing all about this amazing game where you can live the life of an interstellar merc/smuggler/trader. It sounds too good to be true, but he HAS to play this game. An entire universe to explore in his Amsttqd computer! It’s clear the passion for this game had reached my game hating parents. I’d been trying to save but it was an expensive game, so IMAGINE my surprise and excitement when on Christmas morning I unwrapped the damn thing. I don’t *think* I cried, but I do have memories of being excused to play it. Running upstairs all excited about the adventures that lay in wait. The main thing I remember is thinking “hmm, that’s strange, games usually load pretty quickly” (I was a posh kid with the CPC6128... with a disk drive!). I was pretty persistent, but several hours later had to give up. THEN the tears started. No matter, we’ll exchange it, and until then you’ve got some Lego/Star Wars/transformers or something to play with. Over the subsequent week or two I think we got through three of four copies before admitting defeat. My computer would not load/run the game. I have never fucking played Elite.

    Nintendo Switch

My boy’s Switch has decided to not boot up any more. It just gets stuck on the Nintendo Switch logo screen indefinitely. A bit of googling indicates a couple of potential solutions (hold the volume buttons down and power up after a hard power down) but nothing doing Anyone had a similar problem and found something that works?

Seminal games you can’t remember playing

Mario Sunshine. I have vague memories of running around on girders or scaffold or something, and sun. And cleaning shit up. Completely unmemorable apart from that. And like the OP I think I played HL2. But I can’t remember how much, or anything about it. It was in a city I think.

ONRUSH - A New Breed of Arcade Action

@dumpster your impressions pretty much mirror my own. I only bothered with multiplayer and got an evenings “enjoyment” out of it, but ultimately it was a confusing, overly brash and unsatisfying experience. Never really felt in control, but worse didnt feel my actions had much bearing on results, even if you got an MVP reward or felt like you had a good match. It was just boring really. Shame, as in principle it was right up my street too.
  11. 35 hours spent already!?!!? Jesus, that happened quickly. Time just disappears playing this. Just defeated the third palace boss, which was suspiciously easy. Really fun one through, and felt like I was actually making good tactical battle decisions. Now or it’s time to try and turn on the charm with Makoto. Or maybe the doctor. Hmmmm....
  12. Well as if by magic, the next action ranked me up in knowledge!! phew, I thought it was a bug or something
  13. Ok, question. How do I get my social stats up? I’ve gained loads on knowledge points, but no increase. Also don’t seem to be able to get a job to improve them.... because I need higher stats. Confused.

What are you playing Christmas Day?

Pretty sure my gf has bought me Spider-Man. So that.
  15. Yeah, I completed the first palace last night. The combat system is really clicking now, and I like the fact the game shifts you along so you're constantly having to balance which stats, relationships, etc you want to prioritise. It seems really hard to grind out experience/stats.
