General chatter - discuss anything here

Has anyone played Dale of Merchants before? I’ve been looking for a light-ish drafting game to try with my girlfriend and this looks like it might hit the spot from the reviews I’ve seen but always good to get further feedback from people who have played it.

Antstream - It's Netflix for Games!

I got to try this out at PlayExpo and I was impressed by the demo. Me and my friends got to try a couple of games out for both a full version and the challenges. We all had a go, it got a little competitive, and none of us felt any discernible lag while playing. Personally, I really liked the challenges and I can see them being a great implementation, especially with the leaderboards. The only ones I saw were for points, which is fine but it would be interesting to know if there will be other challenges such as time trials.

    Yoku's Island Express

Definitely picking this up, I just can’t decide whether to get it digitally or wait for the physical version.

    Xbox One Console Thread

You can also buy single pieces of downloadable content that you own from a season pass. For example, I bought the big Telltale pack and I could potentially still buy the episodes separately.
  5. Rumours are that there maybe a Battle Royale type mode added in place of the campaign. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/kotaku.com/sources-next-call-of-duty-wont-have-a-solo-campaign-m-1825338768/amp

    The Witness

Is that a rhetorical question or do you want an answer on how that is the solution? The other panels on the learning boards are usually pretty good at teaching you what the rules are.

    Forza Horizon 3

Interestingly for Blizzard Mountain and Hot Wheels each race has stars and medals attached to them and winning is a condition of getting them all. I’m not sure if you can still unlock everything without winning but it’s definitely more noticeable. Wonder if this will carry over to FH4. For me FH3 has been the right mix of things, if I want to race I can get straight to it, if I want to just drive and explore or try throwing myself off danger signs then I can do that as well. Once I had finished the main championship in FH2 I was done but I keep coming back to 3. The Forzathons definitely help with this and I try to do a different race for each challenge to get all the routes done.

    Let's talk about Loot Boxes

Chris Lee the Hawaiian representative has been questioning the ESA about loot boxes in a televised session. They don’t have much to say but it is interesting how unprepared they are. The video is below, the questioning starts at around 4.20.

    Forza Horizon 3

I wouldn’t mind them so much if there was an option to turn off the traffic. It’s more than a bit annoying to have a run cut short because there are three cars racing each other coming at you on a narrow road. At at least they are optional events.

    Forza Horizon 3

Unlocking all the fast travel boards definitely helps with cutting down on the non-racing when you want to. Being able to fast travel everywhere for free is a huge boon. Especially when Championships are very spread out or you just want to change car quickly.

    Your dream game

The Bit-trip runner series is a bit like this, especially Runner 2 with the music getting more intense as you collect more pick ups. Not quite what you've described but possibly worth a look if you haven't already.

Football Manager - FM19 release date Nov 2nd

You can add me to the list of people who have bought FM18 due to the stories and reports in this thread. Haven't had time to install it and get set up yet but looking forward to it as it will be my first one in a long time.

Danganronpa v3 Demo - where is it?

Having just looked for it on Google it looks like it might only be on the US PSN store. I found a link but when it tried to change to the EU store on loading, it couldn't find anything.

    Let's talk about Loot Boxes

This is a link to the Guardian's piece on the latest Gambling Commission report which mentions video games and 'skins' betting: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/dec/12/children-britain-problem-gamblers-report
  15. That twitter thread is a really good read, it's also not that far away from most of Jim's (and others) arguments against loot boxes. It seemed to me that it was trying to highlight ways in which micro-transactions can be done well and ethically and calls out most of what is done these days as a money grab that is poorly implemented (Battlefront especially). What was really interesting is the parts about growing, and keeping, your core audience and that most of the examples given are free-to-play models. That is one of the biggest bugbears with this issue, the way in which they are being used in games that you have already paid for. Let's take Overwatch as a example as it is one of the few titles mentioned as a good example of micro-transactions that also has an initial purchase price. Firstly I should say that I have only played a bit of Overwatch, not even getting to the proper ranked modes in it. Originally on release I think you could buy all of the extras that could be won through loot boxes using an in game currency, so it was possible to unlock all of the extra content through play alone. Everything was cosmetic only and you could play the same game as everyone else without any extra pay out. On the face of it, that seems to be one of the more ethical models for micro-transactions. However, the loot that you get from the boxes is of course random so you have no guarantee that you will get the drop that you want, so there is an element of gambling in there. From what I have read, the special event costumes that have been released can only be got through loot boxes and can't be directly bought in any way. If that is the case, then that is definitely less ethical and is pushing the player into spending money on a chance to get the item they want over a limited time period. The flip-side to this is that extra maps, characters and events are provided to all players for free to keep everyone on a level playing field and so that everyone can match with everyone. So everyone benefits through a percentage of the players paying for it, how ethical that is will be down to individual views. At the end of the day micro-transactions are there to make the developer money from their game and how they are implemented has a large impact on how your game is viewed. I don't think anyone would argue against triple AAA budgets having grown along side developer expectations, but how much of that has been driven by the way in which the market has operated. You just have to look at how studios chased the Call of Duty model to try after its success. There are other ways of recouping costs though or to make money on games, while I've been writing this Clippa has addressed this in the thread. While micro-transactions can be done 'right' it seems hard to argue that they are currently being increasingly used as cash-grabs which use direct incentives and advantages to try and force players to buy them. I can't see how anyone could argue for loot boxes when this is becoming the norm.
  16. Does he though? The main targets of his loot box ire have been big publishers such as EA, Activision (including Blizzard), Take Two and Ubisoft. Hard to argue that none of those are rich. Also it seems hard to argue, in my opinion, that loot boxes and micro transactions are being done out of anything but greed when it comes to full price titles. What other reason is there other than to make more money? It's certainly not for the 'player choice' crap that they normally come out with in defence of the practice. Again this seems disingenuous as your whole argument is that it makes good business practice to target certain players over others but that this isn't unethical. I'm sure it does from a money making perspective but that's kind of the whole point of Jim's complaints. That you are targeting groups of players to make you money over others. It's another way of making extra money and nothing else, pure and simple. Makes sense from a business point of view, but you can't seriously claim that it is in the consumers interests in the slightest. That's clearly not true either. He does more research into his areas than any of those wankers. Yes his style can grate and be very over the top at times, but most of his core arguments come from a solid base. The main argument in those videos was that there was no quality control on Steam, which again seems hard to argue against. Most of the games featured were asset flips or buggy, unfinished shite. Greenlight was plagued with this bollocks which is most of the reason why Valve got rid of it, eventually. The main argument was that these games were flooding the new releases pages, pushing actual small developers off of the front pages before they had a chance. It's also worth noting that Jim also did his best of Greenlight videos as well.

    GAF Meltdown - owner accused

I must have missed the Friends episode where Monica is being sick in a shower so Joey stripped off to join her. Then later told everyone at Central Perk that the event never happened but was harmonious and consensual. Just to make sure he also then tells Chandler how Monica is mentally ill, making it up and once actually tried to sexual assault his old girlfriend and is now jealous. There were ten seasons though so there was a lot to get through.

Is this the post you are talking about @probotector? If so you were not directly called a cunt. If you associate yourself with the type of people @TehStu was directing it at though...

I think sprite quoted that at you for the idea that something could be classified as serious sexual assault and not-so-serious sexual assault. All sexual assault is serious sexual assault!

Gran Turismo Sport -Tuesday nights forum races

If you are worried you could change the top to 'No to Brexit' or something more colourful if Sony allow it (I'm guessing they don't).
  22. Freedom of speech is important, but someone's right to say something doesn't mean you have to legitimise their views and give them a bigger stage. It also gives you the freedom of speech back to tell them they are wrong and a cock.

    SNES Mini

Got my confirmation text from Argos but nothing from Smyths yet, bar the original pre-order confirmation email.
  24. It's an odd one, I've turned off some of his stuff as it is so self indulgent and ego driven but then there are other videos where it really does come across as an act. Especially in some of the first play videos where he can be really self-depreciating and sometimes leaves in mistakes or admits them, such as when he messes up the video recording. Maybe it is to do with working off of a script rather than reacting as you sometimes see similar in the Jimquesition videos when he ad-libs.

    Cuphead. Classic cartoon inspired side-scroller

Wait so you thought about a way to undermine your own argument, then took the effort to fabricate a backstory that fitted, posted it and waited for people to notice and use the issue that you had already invented. I'm not sure this is the masterplan you think it is...
